The security scan is therefore not merely a convenience. It helps reconstruct the ship's temporary society before it moves.

The Moment Before Sailing

Eventually the delayed coach turns onto the pier.

Forty passengers emerge, often laughing or embarrassed, while people on balconies watch from above.

To the casual observer the drama is over.

But the significant event occurred before the coach appeared.

The institution converted uncertainty into knowledge.

It established:

·        why they were absent;

·        where they were;

·        whether they were expected to return;

·        how their delay affected departure.

That is what passenger accounting really means.

The cruise ship cannot guarantee that every passenger will behave predictably.

It can build a system capable of detecting when they do not.

The remarkable thing is not that a coach occasionally comes back late.

It is that a floating institution carrying thousands of people can usually identify the absence of a few individuals, relate those people to a coach somewhere ashore, communicate across several organisations, and turn a human delay into an operational decision before the ship sails.
